Meet Italy Launch Event
After three months of hard work behind the curtains, MEET ITALY had its debut event on the evening of November 29th at the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles.
Weeks of frenetic preparations lead to a successful evening where many representatives of the Italian and Italian American professional and scientific community, along with other local entrepreneurs, came together for an opportunity to interact and share ideas.
Keynote speaker, Silvio Angori, CEO of iconic design and engineering Italian outfit Pininfarina discussed the future of design in the context of a changing economy where the relevance of the idea of possession of an object is fading away and the need for an “experience” is becoming increasingly prevalent.
Mr. Angori discussed the challenges and opportunities of an outfit such as Pinifarina in today’s world. He recognized the need to be geographically close to innovation and yet, as the firm expands its global footing, he also stressed the need to continue to let the Italian esthetic heritage flow into the new work.
Based on the ideas discussed, one can infer that Pininfarina could be on the cusp of an exciting cycle. The firm’s history as masters of integrating superior design with engineering solutions seems to be the necessary skill set for a company facing a new society that searches for efficient and sleek solutions to everyday tasks.
During the Q&A session, Mr. Angori also explained a long term bet Pininfarina is making by developing a hydrogen based racing car. Mr. Angori gave his perspective on the different time frames of competing technologies such as electric cars versus fuel cell vehicles. In the process, he also acknowledged the risk one firm must accept when making long term strategic decisions.
The evening was also characterized by introductory speeches about the new MEET ITALY platform by the founders Valeria Rumori and Davide Accomazzo and a video by Jeff Capaccio, founder of the Silicon Valley Italian Executive Council.
Following the presentations, the selective crowd mixed in the patio and the first step toward the establishment of that “center of gravity” for the professional excellence of our community in Los Angeles was taken.
What’s next now? While launching MEET ITALY was a big concerted effort, the work has just began. We will follow up with a feedback questionnaire and we will incorporate YOUR ideas in our development framework. In the next few weeks, we will also decide on the topic for the next meeting, currently scheduled tentatively for March 2nd.
In the meantime, we will also schedule a few “Brainstormers” and we invite those interested in participating to reach out to Davide Accomazzo, Valeria Rumori or via our website.
In conclusion, the team at MEET ITALY wants to thank you all for making our debut a great and sleek success. We would also like to thank the other institutions that supported the opening event such as the Italian Consulate General and the Italian Trade Commission.
Lastly, we would like to thank and recognize our commercial partner, Pat Walker Travel, who was just recently named a 2017 Top 25 All Star by Travel Agent magazine.
See you at the next event!
